When Barbara Margolis created Fresh Start more than 20 years ago on Rikers Island, her goal was to teach incarcerated men and women basic culinary skills to prepare them for careers in food service. In 2008, the Rikers Fresh Start program merged with Osborne’s in-house catering program to pair the training we provided in Rikers with hands-on job experience that could lead to stable job placements. Fresh Start Catering grew to serve local, community-based organizations who shared our passion for high-quality food at competitive prices—all while serving a higher social good.
